World War 2 accessible for children

26th August 2008

Big Picture Interactive (BPI) and the National Archives are bringing recent history to life with the launch of a new website focussing on World War II.

Using animated maps, original documents, photographs and film clips, the Learning Curve World War II site lets users study the war across the globe – both Western and Eastern Europe but also battles across North Africa, Asia, the Atlantic and the Pacific.

The site, which supports the National Curriculum for Key Stages 3 and 4 in History, brings together dozens of firsthand accounts to allow users to see how the war was perceived as it progressed.

Teachers’ notes are included as well as downloadable film and audio, printable PDFs and set tasks, to make the site ideal for students studying this period in history.

Big Picture used a combination of Flash interactive elements and HTML to create the site – including a rotating globe to emphasise the global coverage of the war – with usability and accessibility at the forefront of requirements.

This is the latest in a series of educational websites created by BPI for National Archives, with others including Tudor Britain (a joint project for the National Archives and the V&A Museum) and the Civil War.

For information on how BPI can help you with website design, improve your site’s usability and accessibility, or improve user experience through interactive elements, call 01926 422002 or email.
