Interactive Site Sails Online
1st October 2008
HMS Belfast’s role in World War II has been brought vividly to life by a site built by Big Picture Interactive (BPI).
The “Colours to Sunset” educational site has been built as a resource for primary teachers and their students, providing a rich experience to explain the significance of HMS Belfast’s role in World War II and beyond, and to illustrate what life was like onboard the ship.
The site uses Flash to engage the visitor, backed by a massive range of materials drawn from the Imperial War Museum’s archives – video, audio, pictures, hand-written memories and more.
BPI’s technical development team used XHTML, CSS, JavaScript and Flash to build the interactive site which is fully compliant with W3C’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0.
As well as being a primary level education resource, the site is also useful to casual browsers who want to learn more about HMS Belfast, it offers a comprehensive background for people before they visit the ship, and also allows the enthused visitor to research further into the ship after they have made a visit.
For the benefit of schools and educational groups, all the sources on the site are displayed in an interactive whiteboard friendly format, providing a unique opportunity for classes to explore key events in history through the experiences and memories of those who witnessed them first hand.
This is just the latest in a wide range of educational sites built by BPI, including History of London and Learning Curve - Civil War.
One of the newest sites created by BPI is Learning Curve World War II, covering the same era as the HMS Belfast site.
